I really enjoyed “Alpha,” which is essentially a story about how a boy becomes a man and a wolf transforms into a dog. The cinematography (by Martin Gaschlact) is spectacular – I didn’t see it in IMAX, but, if I had a do-over, I would!
It’s 20,000 years ago and a small tribe of cave-men are about to go on their annual hunt to kill enough bison to have food for a year. The “alpha” male and chief of the tribe is Tau (Johannes Haukaren Johannesson). Making his hunt debut is Tau’s son, Keda (Kodi Smit-McPhee), of whom big things are expected. The hunt is very dangerous and some won’t return. Keda’s mother doesn’t think he should go (pleading “He leads with his heart, not his spear”), but Tau thinks Keda is ready (affirming “He’s stronger than you know”). Keda is an empathic young man. His father gives him a chance to kill an animal for food before going on the hunt, but Keda can’t bring himself to do it, despite the urging of his father.
It’s a long and dangerous journey to where the bison roam – including encounters with predatory cats – but the tribe makes it there with minimal losses. During the hunt, Keda’s reluctance to kill a bison results in what appears to be a mortal injury. As Keda is inaccessible for rescue, he is reluctantly left behind by the tribe.
Miraculously, Keda survives and begins the arduous trek home. A pack of wolves attack, but Keda wounds the alpha wolf of the pack (played by Chuck), causing the rest of the wolves to disperse. Instead of killing the alpha wolf, Keda nurses him back to health. They grow to trust each other and help each other during their treacherous return trip to Keda’s tribal home. During the odyssey, Keda becomes an alpha male and the wolf gets domesticated. Will Keda and the wolf successfully complete their journey or will the harsh elements and predators defeat them? Be forewarned that film is sub-titled, since the tribe speaks a cave-man language.
I think that there ought to be an Oscar for “Best Performance by an Animal.” If there was one, Chuck deserves it! Bottom line, “Alpha” makes my “A” list!
