“The Accountant” was released in 2016, so it’s been nearly a decade for the sequel to be released. I didn’t remember anything about “The Accountant” except that I had liked it. In retrospect, I think it would be a good idea for those who liked “The Accountant” to see it again before seeing this one. If you haven’t seen the first film, I recommend that you rent it. If you don’t like it, then it’s very probable that you won’t like the sequel either.
The Accountant, Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), is an autistic math savant who often works for criminals. His brother, Braxton (Jon Berthal), is a hit man. They have a love/hate relationship and haven’t spoken to each other for years. Mary Beth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) is the head of FinCEN. Her former mentor, Raymond King (J.K. Simmons), is now a private investigator. King meets with a woman named Anais (Daniella Pineda) and wants to hire her to find a couple and their young son who disappeared many years ago. King suspects they may have been taken by a Mexican cartel who engages in the sex trade, among other illegal activities. Unfortunately, there are men with guns at the meeting place, as well as right outside it. Shots start firing, and King is soon shot and killed. Before he dies, he writes on his arm “call The Accountant.” Anais escapes unharmed.
Medina goes to the morgue to identify King and sees King’s instructions to call the Accountant. Medina then calls Wolff, who in turn calls Braxton, and off they go to find the missing family. I won’t say any more about the plot, but the dynamics between Christian and Braxton are interesting and often very funny. There are also many very good action scenes. On the downside, the plot was a bit too complicated (at least for me), and I didn’t find the plot line of the missing family compelling, since two of the family members weren’t well developed.
Nevertheless, if you are looking for an entertaining action film with some good comic relief, you will enjoy “The Accountant 2.” On the whole, its assets are well in excess of its liabilities.
