A Haunting In Venice: “Who Knew?”

If you enjoyed “Death on the Nile” (2022), the initial ‘Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot’ murder mystery movie (based on an Agatha Christie  novel), then you will like this one, too.  I would rate them about the same.  Branagh also directed this movie.  The screenplay is based on the 1969 Christie novel “Hallowe’en Party.”  The Christie novel is set in England in 1969, but the film is relocated to Venice in the 1940’s.

Hercule Poirot (Branagh) is the world’s greatest detective.  He has gotten bored solving crimes, so he has retired to Venice.  He lives an isolated life, without a lover or even any friends.  (Ironically, why he has chosen this life for himself remained a compelling mystery!)  Poirot’s retirement has damaged crime novelist Ariadne Oliver’s (Tina Fey) career, since her best novels were based on Poirot’s cases, and the ones that she makes up are duds.  Her last few books haven’t sold many copies, and she resents Poirot for ruining her career.

In her hope to write a block-buster, Oliver invites Poirot to a séance, featuring the famous medium Joyce Reynolds (Michelle Yeoh).  Ms. Reynolds is going to try to make contact with the recently deceased teenage girl, Alicia Drake (Rowan Robinson).  Foul play in her death is suspected, but the police are clueless.  Poirot is skeptical of mediums and thinks they are charlatans, so he is intrigued by the challenge of exposing Reynolds as a fraud!  Numerous others are also invited to the event.

Suffice it to say, two of those attending the séance are murdered, so Poirot not only has to solve not the murder of Alicia, but also the two others attending the séance.  Of course, Poirot effortlessly figures it all out, although Robin and I didn’t.

The movie is entertaining and a nice way to spend two hours, if you enjoy murder mystery films.  It will work fine as a rental, but there aren’t many good films out now, so if you’ve already seen “Oppenheimer,” Barbie,” and “Gran Turismo,” this is probably the best movie currently in the theaters.

Bottom Line: “A Haunting in Venice” won’t “leave you hanging!”

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
