Zootopia

If you want to get in-touch with your inner “party-animal,” I recommend you catch “Zootopia” before it leaves the theaters.

Zootopia is a large city where all the animals can talk.  The predators no longer have aggressive tendencies, and live in harmony with their prey.  Bunny Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes the first ever rabbit police officer for Zootopia.  (Apparently, there is still some crime, but police officers, at least up to now, were all  large, male animals, usually predators.)  Lt. Hopps graduated first in her class at the police academy, but she is discriminated against by the police chief both for being female and a rabbit.  She is almost fired, but gets a second chance when she agrees to solve a difficult case within 48 hours.

Judy develops an improbable friendship with Nick Wilde (Jason Batemen) – a fox!  They start working together to solve the case, which involves 12 missing predators.

The movie has some very funny moments, especially when Judy and Nick are in a hurry at the DMV and are “assisted” by sloths.

This film metaphorically tackles head-on adult themes, such as prejudice, discrimination, sexism, terrorism, and friendship.  I didn’t like it quite as much as last year’s masterpiece “Inside Out,” but it’s still a very good, fun movie with a deep message.

I’m in the mood now for some milk and animal crackers, so I’ll catch you later.

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
