This film is set in the early 1960’s during the Kennedy administration at the peak of the cold war. Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) is the CIA’s #1 agent.  He was previously a criminal and owes the CIA 5 more years of service or he will go to jail.  His assignment is to thwart a diabolical scheme by  Victoria Vinciguerra (Elizabeth Debicki) – a Neo-fascist Italian Shipping Magnate – to perfect a device which can convert conventional warheads into nuclear weapons.  Whoever has this device will control the world!

Solo is sent to East Berlin with a mission to extract the beautiful mechanic Gaby Teller (Alicia Vikander of Ex-Machina — I’m leaving the Lexus dealership and bringing my car to her for service next time!), whose family seems to have connections with the Vinciguerra family.  Gaby’s Uncle Rudy (Sylvester Groth) seems to be the obvious starting point, and may even be able to lead to Solo to the device!  While extracting Gaby, Solo gets the best of top-KGB-agent Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer), who was also trying to capture her, since the Russians desperately want the device too.

Solo and Illya aren’t fond of each other, but, since the USA and the Soviet Union now have the same dangerous enemy, both agencies force them to team up – along with Gaby – to find the device and eliminate the threat.

The film is faithful to the show and is quite stylized.  The plot and pacing are good, as are the action scenes.  There is considerable humorous banter between the three leads, although that occasionally becomes a bit tiresome.  On the whole, however, this is one of my favorite summer popcorn movies (along with Spy, Ant-Man and Mission Impossible).

I’d see the movie on the BS soon, before the the mushroom cloud hits LA!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
