Although a bit on the slow side, this film still has plenty going for it!  With “Transparent” being a hit TV show and Caitlyn Jenner educating us all about the transgender phenomenon, this film is certainly timely.  The movie tells the fascinating, true story about the first known man ever to undergo transgender surgery.

It’s the 1920’s and Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) is a moderately-successful landscape painter living in Copenhagen with his lovely wife, Gerda (Alicia Vikander). They are a happily married couple, with what seems to be a normal sexual relationship.  Gerda is also a painter, although not quite as successful has her husband.  One day, Gerda’s female model for one of her unfinished paintings is unavailable, so she asks Einar to pose for it while wearing stockings and holding lace.  Somehow, this awakens within Einar intense, previously-latent feelings about being a woman (Lili) trapped in a man’s body.

The film deftly explores the gradual transformation of Einar to Lili, and how this dramatic change profoundly impacts their marriage and severely tests their commitment and love for each other. The two leads give excellent performances – which were required to do justice to the film, for which Tom Hooper (Director) deserves props.

Even if you don’t like Danish, I anticipate that you will enjoy the subtle and poignant flavors of “The Danish Girl.”

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
