If you’re in the mood for a monster-alien sci-fi flick, you will probably enjoy “Life.”  You won’t think about it three seconds after you leave the theater, but the film has a brisk pace, plenty of action, good special effects, and an alien (Calvin), who has considerable charisma!

The film takes place on a space station which has received some martian soil samples.  Amazingly, one of the samples contains a living single-celled organism!  The station transmits this fantastic discovery to Earth, and a child names the organism “Calvin.”  The alien has some unique and well-thought-out attributes.  Calvin is initially in quarantine, but he starts thriving and grows additional cells quite rapidly.  Each cell is identical, consisting primarily of nerves and muscles.  Each cell communicates with each other, so it is very intelligent.

Calvin escapes from quarantine and soon starts killing off some crew members.  Calvin, it turns out, has an insatiable appetite for blood.  Dr. David Jordan (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Miranda North (Rebecca Ferguson) are trying to eliminate him, but Calvin is too quick, strong, and smart.  Additionally, he gets bigger and smarter with each passing minute.  He also has as interesting appearance, along with the personality of a shark.

If David and Miranda can’t knock off Calvin, life on Earth may be in serious jeopardy!  Can Calvin be stopped?!  You’ll have to see it to find out!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
