If you are looking for a summer popcorn family movie with a little “bite,” take a trip to Jurassic World!  This is a “Go Big or Go Home” movie. If you don’t see it in IMAX 3-D, you are making a “huge” mistake.  It’s worth the extra money.

Two brothers, Zach and Gray (Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins) are on vacation to visit their Aunt Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), who is the Park  Administrator for Jurassic World on Isla Nublar. Jurassic World has been open for about 20 years without incident, but attendance has plateaued.  Much like Disneyland, the park needs an exciting new attraction to spark interest.  Up to the challenge, Dr. Wu (BD Wong) has been working on a secret project, almost ready to be unveiled to the public. The Security Department just needs to make sure that any escape from its area is impossible.

The Velociraptor trainer Owen (Chris Pratt) has doubts about the wisdom of this creation. He is a back-to-nature, go-with-the-flow type of guy, while Claire is a tightly wound, type-A personality.  The two had one date a while back, but it was a dud.

Needless to say, the “asset” escapes, wreaks havoc on the park, goes after the staff and patrons, and puts Nick and Gray in grave danger. A military slimeball, Hoskins (Michael D’Onofrio) gets the “brilliant” idea to free the Raptors in order to hunt the asset down. Owen and Claire are forced to team up to try to save the day. The rampage causes breaches all over the park, inciting mayhem such as Pterodactyls swooping down, carrying off and gobbling up the patrons (a scene even cooler than in Hitchcock’s “The Birds”).

The special effects are fantastic.  The dinosaurs are ultimately realistic (although I haven’t hung out with one recently) and the film moves along at nice clip.  There are numerous scary scenes, but the film is not especially bloody. The movie also has considerable comic relief.

Will the good guys make it out of the park alive?  Will Owen and Claire develop something special in this day of horror?  You’ll have to go and see for yourself!

On the whole, it’s a nice re-boot of the original movie.  If you never saw Jurassic Park, this is almost a must-see.  If you did and enjoyed it, you will appreciate this scary journey down memory lane.

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
