My wife (Robin) was named after Christopher Robin, and my father’s pet name for my mother was “Pooh,” so Robin and I wanted to see it despite the mediocre reviews.  The first half was so slow that I needed to shave by the time the second half started, but the second half was good enough that it’s probably worth renting if you loved “Winnie the Pooh.”

A. A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) is home from WWI and has PTSD!  He thinks war is horrible and wants to write a book that will promote world peace.  While playing with his son, Christopher Robin (Will Tilston), he gets the inspiration for the book.  Christopher Robin is much closer to his nanny, Olive (Kelly MacDonald), than he is to either his father or mother, Daphne (Margot Robbie).  Both are beyond distant and think children should be seen (occasionally) and not heard.

Anyway, “Poohmania” hits the world, and poor Christopher is parading around the globe doing interviews.  His whole life gets “f”-ed up and his childhood gets ruined.  The second half is about how Christopher Robin gets exploited and feels violated by the book’s success intruding on his life.

I didn’t like Robbie or Tilston much, but MacDonald and Gleeson did a fine job.  If you liked the book, I’d rent it; otherwise, I’d pass.

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
