Don’t Think Twice

This film has received fantastic reviews, and it deserves them!  It’s one of my favorite movies of 2016 and is a Must See!

“The Commune” is a six-person improv group located in Brooklyn.  They aren’t making much money, and the theatre they have been using is being sold.  Everything in their lives is up in the air.

Miles (Mike Birbiglia – Writer/Director) started the group years ago.  He has taught the others in the current group, but prior members have moved on to bigger and better gigs while he has been left behind.  There are 3 main rules of improv: 1 – Always say “Yes”; 2 – It’s all about the group; and 3 – Don’t think!  (I’m a master at #3!)

Two group members, Samantha (Gillian Jacobs) and Jack (Keegan-Michael Key) are romantically involved, which complicates their situation.  The movie has many very funny improv sketches which include the other group members – Bill (Chris Gethard), Lindsay (Tami Sagher), and Allison (Kate Micucci).

The previously-stable group dynamics change when a group member lands a job with the big-time show “Weekend Live.”  Complex emotions are triggered in all the members, such as hope, jealousy, guilt, anxiety, despair, etc.

The characters are very well developed and the ensemble cast is excellent, especially Jacobs, who I predict will soon be a star.  This film fires on all cylinders and is a very funny, emotionally-intense, complex, and poignant film.

Don’t think!  Just see it ASAP!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
