If you are still interested in seeing Woody Allen films (despite his well-publicized personal problems), don’t miss “Cafe Society.” I enjoyed this movie more than any Allen film since “Match Point,” and, so far, it’s my favorite movie of 2016!
The movie has the usual Allen themes of love, psychic conflict, moral and ethical issues in a Godless universe, etc., but they are woven together in a seamless and masterful way. It’s primarily an interesting love story filled with plenty of funny scenes. The film is narrated by Allen, whose skill as a Director now has few peers. Kristen Stewart is fantastic! Jesse Eisenberg plays a young Woody very well, with just the right amount of frenetic energy and awkwardness, but less nerdy. Another bonus is the sumptuous cinematography by Vittorio Storaro.
Bobby (Eisenberg) is bored living with his mother in NYC, so he decides to move to Hollywood. His maternal uncle Phil Stern (Steve Carell) is a very rich and successful movie star agent who gives him a job with his agency as a ‘gopher.’ Bobby is immediately smitten with Phil’s secretary, Vonnie (Stewart, looking better than ever). She has a boyfriend, but he travels frequently, so they start hanging out together as friends. Bobby is biding his time, however, hoping they split up.
I can’t say much more about the plot without spoiling it, but there are some outrageously funny scenes. For example, Bobby is ‘in the mood’ and, for the first time in his life, decides to have a call girl come to his hotel room. The woman, however, has never worked as a prostitute before. Only Allen could write a scene like this which made me LOL!
If you’re an Allen fan, it’s a MUST SEE!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy.
